Nourished by Carms
By Carmelina Manzo, Latrobe Valley startup
A range of granolas that are gluten free, dairy free, vegan and FODMAP friendly certified
“I wanted a cereal that I could have in the morning that was nutritious, but was also low FODMAP. Because I couldn’t have oats, I could never eat traditional granola or muesli. I started playing around with recipes for myself and friends would come over and I’d say, “Try my granola”.
One day one of my friends said to me, “Why don’t you start selling it?” I was at home with my kids while I was on maternity leave and I thought, why not?! “It’s been great having discussions with the other participants and building relationships with people in the group, seeing that my situation isn’t an abnormal situation, that everyone struggles with the same work life balance.
“Having a product that can be sold online is good because of the demographic reach, the audience reach that you can have, is so big. Having an online store is a viable option for my business as opposed to one little shop in a town that only has a small population. I’m even receiving orders from international customers who love the product! Through the program I have massively developed my online sales and am also now dealing with high quality health food stores nationally to stock Nourished by Carms.
“I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to do Startup Gippsland. It’s totally, totally exceeded my expectations of what it would be. It’s things that I didn’t think were possible in the Latrobe Valley, to be quite honest. The mentor that I’ve been paired up with is someone who works in Warragul and she has a business that’s not Warragul-based, but serves clients all over Australia. It makes you realise that there’s all these hidden gems in the Valley, that we don’t realise are here.”
