Luxurious products, Natural Soy Wax Candles and Diffusers
“As we worked through the program this extended to a much more long-term strategic plan of how we can manage the business, document and work towards our medium to long term goals.”

Who is Scarlet & Grace?

‘We are an all natural candle and diffuser manufacturer, based in the heart of Gippsland a state in Victoria, Australia. It was from our beloved memories of life and adventure in the heart of Gippsland that the Scarlet and Grace Collection was born. The invigorating 90 Mile Beach sea breezes. Delicious treats from the country bakery. Our Nana’s lavender garden. Each of our fragrances captures a moment, awakens a memory, and most importantly smells blooming wonderful. Sourcing superior ingredients from all around the world, carefully blended into luxurious aromas, every scent tells a story of our home amongst sleepy villages, lush bush gardens, and majestic coastlines.’

Startup Gippsland: Can we have your first + last names please? Tell us a bit about your startup and how was it conceived? How would you pitch your startup to a potential client?

Kaitlyn Abrahall & Ryan Clancy from Scarlet & Grace. We are a homewares brand with a difference. Providing luxurious products such as natural soy wax candles, diffuser’s and hand & body washes. We also offer specialised corporate products.

Startup Gippsland: How did you learn about Startup Gippsland and what was your first thought about it?

Kaitlyn & Ryan: We heard about Startup from someone in our local council in Sale. Our first thought was how amazing that this program was being offered in Gippsland, and how perfect the timing was for our business.

Startup Gippsland: Why did you want to join the program? What was the problem you were trying to solve?

Kaitlyn & Ryan: We wanted to be apart of Startup Gippsland to learn more about how to scale our business. We also wanted to connect with like-minded people around our local area.

Startup Gippsland: What was your experience like in the 12 weeks of the program?

Kaitlyn & Ryan: For us, the first few weeks was all around the ‘sales pitch’ and how to effectively gain more traction and quickly. As we worked through the program this extended to a much more long-term strategic plan of how we can manage the business, document and work towards our medium to long term goals.

Startup Gippsland: What are the biggest benefits of you undertaking the SUG Program? Can you provide an example of how it worked for you?

Kaitlyn & Ryan: Contacts! Meeting a whole range of people from different backgrounds who were facing similar challenges to us. It created a new trusted network for us, and one that we still lean on a lot to this day.

Startup Gippsland: Have you discovered new or different users for your product/service, compared with original expectations? Are you still pursuing your original startup idea? If not, what is your new initiative (name) and where can we find it online?

Kaitlyn & Ryan: Yes we have found new customers, our corporate range was something we had not considered too heavily in the past. We have also released new product lines, changed manufactures, and been an exhibitor at one of the largest buying fair’s in Australia.

Startup Gippsland: What was your biggest success after undertaking the program? Personal or professional (or both)! Please elaborate.

Kaitlyn & Ryan: Our growth in stockists, and our gross sales that have increased 4 times (!!) from the previous year.

Startup Gippsland: What was the Nr 1 skill you’ve learnt, and a realisation you’ve had during/after the program?

Kaitlyn & Ryan: I think the number one thing we have learnt is about playing to your strengths, and asking for help. We were trying to do everything at the start and it wasn’t effective or efficient. By playing to everything strengths and outsourcing things we don’t enjoy, this has made the business run much more efficiently, and also meant we have been more productive as a whole.
